Howlite

Howlite is a lovely, classic stone recognized by its pure white color and intricate webbing in black, brown or grey.  This soft, porous stone was discovered in Canada in the mid 1800s, and today most Howlite comes from Canada and the USA, with some deposits in Turkey, Germany and Mexico.  Howlite is famous for its dye-able qualities, with the right pigments it can be made to look like Turquoise, Lapis or Coral, and often a resin coating is added to protect the color and give luster.  This stone is very soft, and does not facet well, so it looks best in applications where it is curved, like in beads or cabochons.  Howlite is also sometimes called White Buffalo Stone or White Turquoise and is believed to help purify negative energies.  Dry Gulch carries many different cuts, colors and shapes of Howlite, with most of it being processed in East Asia.
